During Andrew Jackson's presidency, South Carolina provoked a crisis by claiming, like my dead from the neck up governor and his wingnut toadies in the Lege seems to be doing, that the state had the right to nullify federal laws it did not like. For a time, it seemed like the Civil War was going to start 30 years early.

It fizzled when Andrew Jackson, pretty literally, threatened to kick a lot of ass, starting with his own veep--whom he threatened to hang. And since Jackson had, IIRC, killed two men in duels earlier Vice President Calhoun took the threat seriously.

Obama won't threaten to hang Rick Perry (more's the pity), but I think anyone who thinks they can test the president in this way is in for a very rude awakening.
