  •  This is totally backwards (none)
Democrats believe in a strong society, a collectivism of shared sacrifice so that all may be well or better.  Inclusion.

Republicans are the individualists.  The "ownership society."

    •  Then whence all the internecine bickering (none)
      on the left?

Yeah, but 'inclusion' means that we work to protect everyone's personal freedoms--the right of gays to live together and to marry, a woman's right to choose. We don't want to interfere in people's lives. We want everyone to enjoy the right to live (and think) freely.

The vast majority of Bush voters are the poorest among us, not 'ownership society' guys. They were persuaded using marketing techniques designed to make them feel included in an elite--a moral elite, in this case. As the price of this 'inclusion', poor Republicans give up any vestige of rational thought, any inclination to question, and just obey the leader.

It's way harder, and correspondingly more rewarding and valuable for those who think for themselves--who are not naturally obedient--to form a consensus and act on it.
