    Or so have been the real golden age of television. It's because some shows today are actually more narrowcasted, going after specific slices of viewers, rather than in the old days they just to simply not displease people.

    The old watchword was "LOP" for "least objectionable program." The idea was that viewers were going to watch SOMETHING, so just don't annoy them and they won't change the channel. Now, the point is to actually attract people. This approach means you'll get more extremes of good and bad -- which is good, because no one's forcing you to watch the bad!
