  •  I would suggest that human need and our ability (0+ / 0-)

    to invent drives change.  And that that change doesn't always mean brand new technology (for instance I think progressive change in the food system would be to move backwards towards more local/smaller/organic farming and away from 20th century methods that relied more on technology and energy than individual knowledge and farming intelligence).

      to change?  In some respects, yes (whether plum is in or not this year).  However, more often than not, the change, and the need to change, is driven by external factors - why do many children want a particular toy?  Because they want to be part of the group.  You can apply similar reasoning to things like the Enlightenment, the rise of an independent judiciary, and of course, technology.
