    It is not just the "learned resistance" -- which you have defined as the adaptation an individual's immune system has made in response to an infection of that individual by an earlier form of the virus -- that is now weak and ineffective.

    It is also the "evolved" resistance that is insufficient. Through the course of prior pandemics, the species has been selected for resistance to the older virus. (there was some talk a while back, which i haven't followed over the years, that some people may be immune to AIDS, because they carry genes that saved their ancestors from the Black Plague.)

    To put the torture behind us is, inevitably, to put it in front of us.
