  •  Not Lithium (4+ / 0-)

Chevron holds some important patents on Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and refuse to issue licenses for batteries over 10 amp hour in capacity. Lithium started way behind but with large capacity NiMH batteries being strangled it's taking the lead. Lithium batteries are even starting to take records from good old Lead acid batteries on the drag strip. Both alternative chemistries beet lead acid battery driving range with ease.

Lithium batteries have advantages. Their efficiency is considerably higher than NiMH batteries (perhaps even higher than good old Lead acid batteries.) Because of the efficiency increase they don't need cooling to charge fast. Lithium batteries have a greater energy storage potential for a given volume and mass (lighter and smaller pack.)

Lithium batteries have disadvantages. They are quite sensitive to overcharge and over-discharge. Active monitoring at the cell level is required. The raw material to build Lithium batteries costs more. Disposal is more of a potential environmental hazard if not recycled.  While some newer Lithium battery chemistries (Lithium Iron Phosphate in particular) reduce the risk of fire, Lithium fires are hard to put out (do NOT add water.)
