This is great, but how bad do us Dems fare in the South?  Is this comparable?

I guess I'll do all regions.

But the South is obviously not comparable. And even many of the "Democrats" in state legislatures are dixiecrats who'd be rock-ribbed Republicans elsewhere. So it's impossible to make apples-to-apples comparisons.

Defining the South as the Old Confederacy, and the North-east as the above minus West Virginia...

        SOUTH:
        Senate: 15 Republicans 7 Democrats
        House: 70 Republicans 59 Democrats
        Governors: 7 Republicans 4 Democrats
State legislative chambers: 11 Republicans 11 Democrats
        Electoral College 2008: 96 Republicans 55 Democrats

        NORTH-EAST:
        Senate: 19 Democrats 3 Republicans
        House: 75 Democrats 17 Republicans
        Governors: 8 Democrats 3 Republicans
State legislative chambers: 21 Democrats 1 Republican
        Ellectoral College 2008: 114 Democrats 0 Republicans

The South is Republican dominant, but not absurdly so. The North-East on the other hand may as well be termed the Solid North.

Confederacy, we've got 4 governors, 7 Senators, at least 10 houses of various state legislatures (2 more are sort of in a grey zone).
I'm too lazy to figure out the number of Rep. we have at the moment.

we've lost significant ground in GA in the past decade, but we're starting to come back, especially as many here already know in VA and NC.

        (clearing throat) Yee-haw!

i can't watch [Obama] speak on tv for more than 5 minutes or else what he's saying starts to make sense to me. It's very scary.
