Just how is Durbin supposed to substitute for Emanuel, as the title to this diary posits?  Emanuel came out of the House and Durbin sits in the Senate.  Both have totally different sets of rules and political dynamics.  Durbin isn't being expected to substitute for anybody.  The only similarity is that both come from Illinois, which doesn't mean anything.  If anybody is going to have to strong-arm the Senate, it is Obama who is now President and former Senate colleague of the hold-outs to the progressive agenda.  Any success or failure in this regard falls on his shoulders, not Durbin's.

when it comes to things the little people want.

and because clearly some "democratic" heads need to be knocked around, unless you're OK with more progressive legislation going down in flames-- and Emanuel is the guy to do it.
