    They needed A Name, someone with experience, who was respected by many.

    Walter Mondale fit that profile.

      In that instance, I suppose there was little else they could do.

      By the way, I did see the memorial...my initial impression was at the time that it was a bit over-the-top...but here's where I admit I didn't know all that much about Wellstone--that which I did hear about him is that he was a great man who represented his state with honor, valor, and vigor--and in retrospect, it really wasn't that bad.  That's how much respect he had in Democratic circles; that he could get that many people to celebrate his life on that evening.

      Anyone talking secession has violated their Oath of Office, and should summarily resign their government posts.

        that was the condensation seed for the shit-storm trashing the memorial as a "campaign rally." I will always remember Mondale's remarks when asked about this, after he lost. He said it was a human mistake, that those who were close to Paul were the ones who lost the most, and we should offer forgiveness. What a mensch.
