  •  hmm, coincidence (6+ / 0-)

We saw a bird very much like that on our feeder yesterday (for the first time). Didn't notice the red breast, but my daughter thought she spotted some red on its wings as it flew onto the feeder.

Why won't birds stay put while you run for your bird idenfication book and/or your camera!?

      your bird identification book? Aack.

    •  Make field notes! Draw hasty little sketches (6+ / 0-)

that you would never show to anyone but show the details that catch your eye!

That was some of the best advice I ever got as a birder.  Keep looking at the bird and look it up later.  The extreme version was:  don't bring a field guide into the field with you.  Just take notes and figure them out later.  I don't have the self-discipline for that, but getting into the habit of sketching and taking notes really did help a lot.  When I'm birding with a friend, we'll often mention the things we're noting out loud, so that if we forget them later the other might fill in the gaps.

They only call it Class War when we fight back.

overtax my drawing skills. I'm going to keep to put a digital camera in our bird room, which is next to the outdoor bird feeder. That way, I'll be prepared in case anyone does something worth capturing.
