And not only for him. To me any D that is not for public option is as good as gone. You have to draw the line somewhere, my families' health is my line.

Specter and Nelson are the firsts to come out against the Public option from the Democratic side we should bury them in phone calls. I will donate and offer time I don;t have to any challenger for Democrats who do not support Public option.

I do worry a bit about Democrats, in the long run, falling into the same chasm Republicans find themselves in.  Where the core of the party seeks a kind of political purity that ultimately destroys the party.  So I'm always a bit leery of distilling the life or death of a politician's career to a single issue.

I was all for taking out Lieberman in spite of the fact that on some issues he has a very solid record.  The reason I supported it was because he was all too willing to undermine the credibility of the Democratic party along the way.  With Specter, I'm in a wait and see mode at this point.

Having said all of that, we are a LONG LONG way from the kind of purity trolling that's become the raison d'etre of the Republican party.  But I'm always going to play the devil's advocate.  Somebody has to :).

You'll have a point, if things go well. :)

There's always a danger of going too far, but right now, we've got 28 years of damage to undo and for a host of reasons both practical and political, healthcare is just one of those line in the sand issues. We certainly shouldn't be doing this on every issue, but this one is different because it is so urgent and there is such consensus about it everywhere but inside the shrinking Republican party.

I was actually happy to hear that Specter changed party. I know we can't have 50 Bernie Sanders. I can let him go on the union card and other issues but we should put a line of minimums and our families, our nation Health care, should be one of the principal ones.

Furthermore, if after all promises Obama does not get to pass a Health reform with Public Option I will think his presidency did not bring anything but mending the GWBush crap. That will not make it , if he really want to be a transformational figure and a real leader he has to get us through real Health care reform.
