defensible ploy that keeps people from looking at a totally indefensible reason for torture-money. The ticking bomb gains enough support from the ignorant, who think it might work, to keep them loud on the subject in defense of it. It's a tactic-'If you get them to ask the wrong questions, the answers don't matter.'.

Evidence presently indicates that torture was commited against innocents who had no useful knowledge, with methods known to elicit false confessions, in order to produce at least the appearance of a basis for a second war, with Iraq. Deep Throat famously said,'Follow the money.'. Control of Iraq's oil would have been worth billions. No bid, no oversight contracts were worth billions. The manufacture of new enemies to justify ongoing and increasing defense spending to contractors, more billions.

Telling the public that terrorists were tortured in order to protect America some of the public will buy. Admitting that innocents were tortured to gain access to oil and war contracts, that no one is going to support. They have a lot of incentive to keep the ticking bomb uppermost in the embroglio.
