  •  I think Dave Bing is one of those guys (6+ / 0-)

    who's always in his prime in one way or the other.

    He was a couple of years ahead of me at Syracuse, where I had the pleasure of watching one exceptional player transform a football powerhouse (national champs in '59) into a two-sport team.

    One dominant big man--say in the mold of Wilt or Kareem--couldn't have done that. It took a 100% team player like Dave to elevate everyone else on a team that averaged almost 100 points a game and made it to the Sweet 16 with a center who was only 6'5".

    But the basketball heroics were only part of why everyone liked Dave. He was neither brash nor retiring--just totally solid in every way, as a student, an athlete and a good natured and accessible member of the college community.

    I wish him well as mayor. It ain't gonna be easy.
