    but I think this is the kind of discussion that makes me think we will continue to make progress on civil rights.

    I understand LBGT impatience but you have a point in terms of how long it took for the racial civil rights (100 years from the end of the emancipation proclamation) movement to make any measurable progress.

    As recently as last year I thought the LBGT community should go slow but now I think the dynamic has changed and that pushing ahead on gay marriage (and perhaps in some places civil unions) is the right way to go.

    I do hope that Obama seizes the day on this and puts it on his agenda ... perhaps after 2010 or maybe in his second term?
