Community is a powerful word, and one that we don't use often enough.  Clinton used it.  (In fact, the DLC used it as part of their three-word epitaph, "Opportunity, Responsibility, Community.")

Community values are Democratic values.  Caring for your neighbor.  Taking care of your kids.  Keeping your yard clean and beautiful.  Forming lifelong bonds with the people you interact with every day, and becoming a valued part of a larger whole.

This is the Democratic ideal, and it strikes a very conservative chord within people.  We can talk to the people Brad is mentioning, if we talk about replacing our Reality TV culture with stronger communities, better neighbors, closer families.  This isn't Hollywood-bashing, and it's not cultural conservatism that offends the more progressive/urban among us.  It allows us to talk about everything from money for schools to the Wal-Mart effect on communities.  It puts Republicans squarely on the side of the powerful few who are trying to make America their playground (if not their dumping ground).

"Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!" -- Benjamin Franklin
