This is exactly what I was talking about!

I live in one of those soulless exurbs in the Bible Belt.  It has NO social capital, the neighbors only speak to each other in sentences - not paragraphs.  If you don't go to 'their Church', you're not part of the 'community.'

Throw in the fact that these churches reinforce the Puritan notion of wealth=God's blessing and concern for the poor = association with NON-Christian folks, and there you have it.

Our message of compassion is WORTHLESS to these people.  They purposely moved to the exurbs to avoid minorities and diversity and their religious leaders craft a message that corroborates and exalts these lifestyle choices.  These same religious leaders inform them that their new found 'wealth' (again, we're not talking about the big bucks) is NOT to be shared or given to an entity that would dare care about someone non-Christian.
