...who remembers the hoopla and the churches bused in from from Kentucky and all that ridiculousness back in 2003 and's amazing how far along we've come since then, and mostly within the last few months.

    Yes, there was California.

On the other hand, in the last month, and today in particular, we've nearly reached legal same sex marriage in 5 of 6 New England states.  We've definitely got in 4 as of today, with a passed bill in the 5th, well, as of today as well.  Not to trade in stereotypes, but as a native New Englander, I must express some surprise that New Hampshire & Maine got to this ahead of Rhode Island.  Perhaps that stubborn small-l libertarian streak in the north country explains more than you might think.

Or maybe being squeezed between Vermont, Massacusetts, Quebec & New Brunswick, same sex marriage legal in each, started to make NH & ME feel like outsiders!

has a conservative GOP governor.  They will passed a bill as soon as there is a Dem in 2011.

...knocking around in RI, but didn't know the status of any of them at the moment.  Perhaps it wouldn't do much good until there's a change in the governorship if they believe they don't have the votes to override.

      yes to this analysis:

stubborn small-l libertarian streak in the north country

The GOP lost its grip on native Granite Staters because the party doesn't reflect their values anymore.

This is another example of that.

...vacation in NH as a kid (and boy, do they love it when MA lawyers & their kids show up!), I am very familiar with the New Hampshire "personality."  When some people used to call it "the Alabama of the North," I used to say "you really don't get it.  They just want everyone to leave them the hell alone."  And the current GOP doesn't leave anyone alone anymore.

In any event, there's still some of that stoney New Englander thing in MA, but not as readily apparent as in the 3 northern states.  My maternal grandmother, for example, could probably be a supporting character in Ethan Frome.

In any event, objections to "Alabama of the North" aside, I will occasionally still refer to you northern barbarians as "Cow Hampshire" (forgiveness, please).
