    It has always struck me when seeing the works of Gauguin and Van Gogh side by side (sometimes, the same subject), there is a striking difference between how each used paint (and I'm talking volume).  Gauguin was so spare, often leaving the canvas to show through, and Van Gogh so liberal - gobbing paint on straight from the tube.

    Descriptions of their life in Arles include living together and sharing expenses - on a tight budget.  If my roommate was sucking down all the paint at my expense, I'd be pretty upset, too.  

    One can imagine big fights over things like this.
