  •  Sorry, but Deeds is not the right choice for VA (9+ / 0-)

My calculation at first was that he was the guy who could carry SW VA, where I live, and I thought he was likeable. But other than that, I knew little about the candidate's platforms and only that McAuliffe seemed to be looking to VA governorship as a launching point for his own national political career.

But after sitting in the audience listening to the debate (video of the debate from the Collegiate Times) held in at the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg (story) last week, Creigh Deeds made two unequivocal statements that lost him my support -

The first was that there is such a thing as clean coal. Brian Moran, on the other hand, said that truly clean renewable energy sources are his priority and he didn't want to see the proposed new coal plant built in Eastern VA. Ding ding ding for Moran.

The second statement Deeds made, the one that really lost me to him was "marriage is between one man and one woman." At that point I was done. Deeds helped the VA constitutional amendment banning gay marriage get to the ballot. Moran voted against it going to ballot. At the debate Moran stated forcefully that all Virginians deserve equal rights and that he supports gay marriage.

McAuliffe, by the way, wasn't even a contender. His behavior on the stage was arrogant and disrespectful not only of the other candidates, but also of the audience. His excuse for not supporting gay marriage was that he wouldn't have time to do everything as governor and would therefore accept discrimination against gay people.

This last outrage against civil rights in America needs to stop. I will be glad to vote for Brian Moran on June 9 and cast my vote for someone intelligent who sees through the coal industry propaganda (and money) as well as refuses to pander to the remaining bigots in our state.
