  •  I think I made clear that, for me ... (8+ / 0-)

...that anyone thinking of executing that personal choice should do so only after the most careful consideration and consultation with others.

It is often a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and many suffer as a result.

from personal experience, it has nothing to do with  careful consideration, but with desperate hope and it's a hope that twists and hurts and no words can soothe it's painful sting. Whether it's because of a terminal illness or the dark gloomy nightshade of the soul, suicide remains a decision only one person can make.

I'm not suggesting that counseling doesn't work because I've counseled my fair share of people on the verge of ending it all, but I don't counsel one way or another, I simply give them an understanding audience. For some, that is what they need but for others, it will just drive them harder, the shame and the embarrassment of having to speak of it at all. I definitely fall into the second category and five years ago, when I made an attempt, counseling might have prevented the attempt or it might have forced me into a more desperate attempt that might have succeeded.

      •  Again your I take issue with your application... (0+ / 0-)

..of the word suicide to both cases here.

Suicide applies to someone who no longer wants to live.  Aid in dying or DWD is to help those who's options for living no longer exist.

Their decision is on the type of death and for many simply getting the prescription doesn't guarantee use but provides someone who fears the end the ability to control the last moments if it gets too much to bear.

Severe depression can take away the ability to think clearly and undertake that consideration.

    •  consultation with others (0+ / 0-)

can happen only where the subject can reasonably expect that he or she is not stripped of their (right to) self determination on first notice of "suicidality" by these others.
