I for one would love to know exactly where my meat comes from and the type of farm.  Maybe we could eliminate the big boys by direct shipping of meat from small farms to homes.

this site - they have a searchable directory of such farms.  It's already been done for you!

    •  abbatoir regs are also a problem (13+ / 0-)

My father-in-law has a small farm in the Olympic peninsula area, where he raises a heritage breed of sheep. They have lovely multi-colour wool, and they are tasty as all get-out :-) He is allowed by law to slaughter lambs for his own consumption, but obviously does not need all the lambs, especially future rams, that are born. But the law prevents him from giving or selling meat he has slaughtered to neighbours or selling it at a farmer's market, like he does with his fruit crop. There is no abbatoir in the area that will take a couple of sheep, strictly big-volume operations.

This is the kind of stupid regulatory issue that makes him a Republican (thankfully, of the Goldwater variety, not the fundie wingnut type). It's hard to argue with him too, because I know he takes his animals' health very seriously and has taken a couple of certified courses on how to slaughter and butcher his meat.
