  •  Power wasn't explicitly based on race (0+ / 0-)

From what I understand, social status and wealth in Latin America is more subtly influenced by ethnicity and race than the in-your-face bludgeon it is in the United States.

If your ancestors were conquistadors, you're likely in charge. If your ancestors were Indians, or slaves, or lower rank soldiers who married locals, or some mix thereof, you're less likely to be in the upper crust of society.

    •  Or just white and poor (0+ / 0-)

didn't have to be mixed. My parents were white. Came here before Castro.

Mother's side of the family, family lore has a pirate in the family.

It's not so cut and dried as conquistadors versus others.

Those "conquistador" if you know Spanish history could have been from House of Lords and courts where the families were mixed with Moore or Jewish.

And there was the white peasant class that didn't mix. Could live as servants in Cuba.

.... them, because you posted a really good one wednesday (Geez, you even got a comment from Meteor Blades) but it won't get much traction without it.
        Hope you read this.
