    His was a battlefield commission.  He earned it the hard way, by gaining the respect of his crew.

    Once Captain, Kirk had the authority to choose his 1st Engineer.

    As far as his getting drunk while chasing tail...  Don't hate the player, hate the game.

    As far as the brawl...  They started that shit 4 on 1 and Kirk stood his ground.

    I don't get your take at all.  I plan to see this movie at least twice more before it leaves theaters.

      Didn't he become Captain by (following old-Spock's instructions) making young-Spock go all crazy on the bridge after talking shit about his mother, thereby making him (the current First Officer) it by default and chain-of-command?

      Father Kirk, on the other hand, was very much a battlefield commission.
