was what bothered me the most.  In Star Trek's future, there is no money and presumably no brands.  Everything is a World Govt Socialist Utopia.

In the new Star Trek, Kirk talks on a Nokia futurephone, drinks Budweiser, etc etc.

is that why Obama's a trekkie?  Quick, call Fox News!

    •  While the World Govt Socialist Utopia... (0+ / 0-) nice, it also makes for some pretty boring TV. The best Trek, in my opinion, is the Trek that explores impossible ethical choices -- the kind that presents humanity as not perfectly evolved, but a species that is trying damn hard to be better.

Besides, during Star Trek's original run, there were plenty of references to money, trading, "getting paid", "federation credits", etc. It seemed like the advent of replicators in the TNG era was the force that truly crushed capitalism (indeed, such an invention would instantly screw up traditional notions of supply and demand).
