    Whether or not Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act survives, these bills may still "clear" the DOJ because they're in line with restrictions placed in other states.

    Either way, they are dangerous.

      Do we have to rely on Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act? I wonder if there's another law the US DOJ could rely on if it decided to oppose these blatant attempts to deny people their civil rights.

        If there were another law that would work then it would be unconstitutional for the same reasons, as far as those bigots are concerned.

      NEVER.
      Half the shit that got precleared under the BUSH administration was OPPOSED by career Civil Rights Division lawyers and precleared over their objections by partisan hacks.  Those days are quite over.
