    ... to even try to discuss things with Catholics, even when (like me) you are a Catholic. The abuse heaped upon you will make you think twice about the necessity of dialogue.

      I'm fond of saying we're all "cafeteria catholics" but we don't all eat from the same steam table.

      The only one that get really abusive are the Real Catholics, like the Catholic League clown.  Otherwise you get some deniers who'll tell you you can't be Catholic or something similar.  

      The trouble, not limited to Catholics, is that when a belief is challenged, most of us tend to get passionate about it.  And these days, we're so bland and so shallow, passion can easily be mistaken for abuse.

      Calling torture enhanced interrogation techniques is like calling a skunk a rose. It really doesn't smell any better.
