Remember when it was a mortal sin to eat meat on Friday? Remember when the entire mass was said in Latin with the priest's back to the flock?

The Roman Catholic Church is a fallible, frail human institution, like all others. The insistence of the Pope and Catholic hierarchy that the Church and only the Church has "the truth" and the key to salvation sticks in the craw of folks like me. We have seen first-hand the foul pedophile priest atrocity and the resulting cover-up orchestrated by complicit Bishops, and facilitated by an astonishingly incompetent Vatican.

Your evident smug hope that the diarist suffer some catastrophic life event that will make him come crawling back is despicable.

very despicable. That's not what I said at all.

It was never a "mortal" sin to eat meat on Friday.

The fact that there are changes to the liturgy over time has nothing to do with this discussion.

As I said above, it's very simple. He said he is an atheist. He also claims to still be a Catholic. That's impossible.

One can freely go either way. But you can't go both ways at once.

He says he does not believe in God and does not believe in the divinity of Jesus. Those are not minor cultural artifacts. They are the very foundation of Christianity.
