    It sounds to me like the diarist is a rather mainstream Roman Catholic, at least in America. Most Catholics I know are not very impressed by the current pope and consider him a transitional leader at best. The hard-liners are still the minority, but as they alienate more people like the diarist, their influence is growing simply because they are driving out the opposition.

      but did you actually read his diary.

      He says he is an atheist who disbelieves that Jesus is the son of God ("deific scion"), among other things.

      I didn't condemn him. I just observed that if that's what he thinks, he isn't a Catholic any more.
