  •  Actually, this is a pretty important diary (17+ / 0-)

For it points up a couple of major problems with the way convetions have developed on this site.

First, and most obviously, is the overwhelming habit of people to make assumptions of content based upon the diary headline alone, and post the first one-liner that comes to mind, only to find that the diary failed to deliver anything remotely close to what the headline (at least in their minds) portends.

Second is the overwhelming aversion to following links in the diary that point up important information as to the point the diarist is trying to make.

Third--something that fuels the first two--is, especially early in a thread--the overwhelming desire to be right up at the top with that quick, affirmative one-liner I referred to above in order to garner maximum mojo.

Finally, there's the problem raised by the headline itself, which is so often written in such a way to gain readers, recommends, mojo for the immediately-posted tip jar, and the comments.

It's the nature of the beast; I'm just amazed that so many are so pissed off at Houle for putting a mirror up to themselves so they can see what they do.  (Actually, no, I'm not all that amazed.)

    •  The "mirror" would be fine. (2+ / 0-)

Holding mirrors up for one another doesn't tend to yank my chain, even though it is pretty miserable sometimes, hahah.

This wasn't a mirror, though. It was a purely narcissistic little jab.

Little jabs are often OK, too, but this one was executed with an "I'm so PRECIOUS and I'm Smarter Than You" style that moved the diarist outside of the category of "interesting troublemaker" and into just plain old "asshole" for me.

Accurately slanting a mirror toward others is an art, and when it's done well, both the one holding the mirror and the person gazing at their own reflection tend to have learned something from the experience.

This diarist is too entranced with himself to achieve that kind of subtlety.

But hey, if you found it instructive and insightful, more power to ya.
