    of correct pronunciation of foreign countries is that, initially, anyone who says it correctly outside the most formal of settings will sound pompous.  I know I'd raise an eyebrow if an American conversationally referred to "Fronce," "Pock-ee-ston," "May-hee-co," "Ee-tall-ya," etc.

      had a corner on Pompous. On the other hand, if anyone outside of William Safire could use the English language well, it was WFB. So maybe he was correct and not pompous in his language, and the rest of use were just jealous.
