  •  My son goes to a Montessori (12+ / 0-)

public school, which is also subject to these stupid state tests, and it PISSES me off. Montessori teaching is almost completely antithetical to that kind of standardized, one-size-fits-all testing.  They don't even do grade levels the same way. The child may be in second grade, but she is in there with first graders and third graders. That lets her move ahead on things she's adept at, and to move at a slower pace on things she is not as adept at. They are encouraged to work independently. There are no rows of desks in these classrooms. Everyone is working, but they are working on their own things at their own pace, and the teachers are moving them through the process. Now, they have to take these dumb-ass tests, even the little kidergarteners. So all this time is being put in after school to teach these learners how to get through boring, stupid, rote questions and answers.

    In a word, AAARRRGGGH.
