Is it really so surprising that men who find it easy to torture foreigners for the most ephemeral of gains (or no gains at all) would find it just as easy to torture Americans who fell under their command?

A largely unexplored aspect of this torture debate is what future consequences there may be for prisoners in this county.  Will we see a return to the days of rubber hoses and backroom beatings, on grounds that they, too, are not torture, or are effective, etc., etc.

And at what point will a right-leaning Supreme Court be inclined to agree that such techniques have become so routine (through use by the military, et al.) that they no longer constitute coercion at all?

Just another reason for us to repudiate these monstrosities (and the monsters who perpetrated them) through public trials and judgements.
