        I mean, yes, he fucked up. And he paid a hideous price (whether he hanged himself or not). It was the quote from Anne Frank's diary that summed it up for me. He did what she was determined not to do - he built his life on that terrible foundation.

        (Of course, we cannot know what Anne Frank went through in her final months. I can barely stand to imagine it. I am sure she was furious, hopeless, anguished - steeped in despair even as she fought, for a while, to live. My heart goes out to her and to all those who suffered alongside her, and I so wish I could go backward in time and find some way to offer comfort to them. But that is useless, grandiose. I must be grateful for what she left us with.)
