for Danny Stover. It was truly a grassroots operation. The biggest problem for Stover was the complete lack of support from the Illinois Democratic Party, county Democratic organizations in the district and Senator Obama. Senator Durbin did do one fundraiser for Stover (although his wife had to fill in at the last minute vecause Durbin was on an emergency trip to the mideast) and he came to a "motivational" luncheon at our office shortly before the election.

I believe that Shimkus will not be defeated because the Illinois Democrats do not want him defeated ... my theory is that there must be some type of backroom deal between Costello & Shimkus and their state party loyalist ... i.e. we won't support anyone running against Costello if you don't support anyone running against Shimkus.

IL-19 will disappear after the 2010 census. I expect that Shimkus' final race will be 2010 and then I look for him to go after some state elected office. He will need to pad his retirement portfolio since his military and congressional pensions won't be enough for him to maintain his lifestyle.

All the incumbents for both parties were drawn safe districts so I'm not sure whether the deal involved Costello.  Who knows?
It still irks me that Democratic leaders signed off on drawing David Phelps out of his district and kept Shimkus instead.  Sure, Phelps was a blue dog but he was pro-union and he never would have gone off the deep end like Shimkus has.

If Shimkus is foolish enough to think he'd have a chance in a statewide election the I'd live to see him run just to get him out of the seat.
