    supposed to return to work next week.

    Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

      long have they been with the company and are they full or part time.  Why is the company mandating this instead of a doctor, and does a doctor agree that this illness.  Perhaps what the illness is.  It may be covered differently.

        due to illness, then it makes sense.  When you're on extended sick leave you're collecting short-term disability, versus being on the company's payroll and not doing your job.
