I am not from VA, but everything I have read about him was that voters seemed to like him. He was a "Regular kind of guy" (Sort of) who liked sports, guns and chewed tobacco and wore cowboy boots. At least that is what I have heard and read. Not that I bought any of it, but I think he did cultiave a likeable image.

He was only considered "a regular kind of guy by those who had no clue about the issues but associated him with his father, Coach George Allen, who took the Skins to the Superbowl.

      •  But it did work (0+ / 0-)

well enough for him to win a Gov's race and a senate race. I never bought it any more than I bought W Bush or GHW Bush as "Regular guys" but it did work.

But it also looks like Virginians (and the rest of the country) realize that we don't want a "regular kind of guy" but rather someone smarter than us. Virginia turned its back on the regular kind of guy image. Look at the electorial map for Virginia for the Presidential election. There's a whole lotta red on that map but Obama still took the state 53% to McCain's 46%. Northern Virginia, Richmond, Blacksburg, Charlottesvile, etc has been pushing the states elections. Even Gerry Connolly  beat the Repub. 55-43 in taking Tom Davis' seat in an area of Northern VA heavily populated by Republicans.
