  •  Crum by Lee Maynard (13+ / 0-)

This is a gem of a book. It has been called a "masterpiece" about growing up in Appalachia, had been something of a cult classic. Look, I grew up in the Bronx where a a field was a "lot" and trees were...geez, i dunno where.

But this book is a most entertaining read. The prose is almost poetic and the picture he paints of life in this town is most interesting.

Crum is a real town in West Virginia just a few miles away from Huntington, but it could just as easily be a world away. The population today is about 300...this is what Maynard brilliantly writes about.

Reading what I just wrote...I sound a bit enthusiastic about his book :)  I am, however, understating it a bit!

    •  Ha, I read A Trees Grows in Brooklyn (6+ / 0-)

so many years ago! It was an eye opener for me...I was soooo young and innocent. In it was a favorite "tale" of my grandmother's. A story she used to tell about her son(my Dad). I read it and realized, that she probably read the book too! WOW! What a link between my Granma and me!
      The old liar!
