Debate in our society occurs primarily in the commercial media.

They are protected by our sole purpose-built corporate right, freedom of the press, to promote their agenda. They're under no obligation to inform the public or promote the public's agendas.

We can have the best discussion in the world in our private living rooms, in a government park before a few hundred people, or here on a blog for a few hundred thousand.

But that's it. Under our system, most of the informing is done by the corporations and they're protected in setting the agenda and choosing the participants.

I don't see how we can have much to say in the debate.

    •  We can have a major say without speaking a word (0+ / 0-)

It's called a ballot box and may be used despite media and pundits trying to phrase things their way. Politicians despite being corrupt are mainly uncanny survivors. It might take a view elections but they are quick to see voter trends provided the voters don't let them forget.

    •  You are thinking like the commercial media... (0+ / 0-)

that is certainly not the only legitimate debate, and many of us actually consider the corporate owned media to be illegitimate. Pay more attention and focus on enhancing citizen and resident debate in America. That is the truly legitimate debate.

corporate media and the egotistical whores they are, if you are talking to me about your cat's flea infestation while I am worried about my sick mother, it won't be long before I tell you shave the damn critter. Certain issues a paramount in one's life, in blaming it all on the media you are giving away your power. I sure as hell don't waste my time with Nancy Grace, but those who decide this makes them more aware of the issue of crime in America are allowing the media to direct their focus. Not me.
