One of the strongest parts of Obama's speech last week was his intention to create a backbone of law so that the abuses couldn't occur again. That's important.

But it's also important to remember that Rumsfeld and Cheney were part of a previous criminal administration--one that was left alone, for the most part, by Clinton and no prosecutions were attempted. Had Clinton taken the attitude that law was law, it's probable we would never have had Rumsfeld, Cheney--or an Iraq war!

Obama describes himself as a pragmatist, and many of his legislative decisions look that way. But because I believe that there will someday be another impotent Bush, the convictions are necessary.

And by the way, I am more and more convinced that 45 will be Hillary. She has made a calculated decision here. She may be Obama's second VP, or simply cut him a deal for SCOTUS after he rotates out. But in any case, she will not fade into the woodwork. When Obama finishes his fourth term she will be 4 years younger and probably a lot healthier than McCain this time around.
