    Different cultures have had different attitudes toward marriage, and one continuous culture (longitudinally) may have had changing attitudes toward marriage over time (and even changing DEFINITIONS), but this

    marriage is concerned above all with female sexuality. The very existence of kinship depends on the protection of females from rape, degradation, and concubinage ... is essentially about who may and who may not have sexual access to a woman when she becomes an adult, and is also about how her adulthood--and sexual accessibility--is defined.  [...]

    This most profound aspect of marriage--protecting and controlling the sexuality of the child-bearing sex--

    has certainly been ONE important aspect of marriage for SOME of the time in SOME cultures.

    Of course, the Standard ignorantly fails to note that to the extent that this is true, this is a SAD truth -- like footbinding or clitorodotomy, to name two other obvious modes of control of female sexuality.
