I have ancestors who walked with Brigham from Nauvoo.  Close relatives have had positions of great importance in "The Church".  Many of them have sung with the Tabernacle Choir.  I know them, and their ilk, well.

I stopped attending when I became an adult and have no regrets.  I never asked to have my name removed from the rolls because a)  it would crush my mother and b)  I didn't care one way or the other.

But now I am trying to get up the courage to do so.  I found out my sister worked herself so hard to pass 8 that she wound up in the hospital.  And was proud to have done so and would do it again, even if it meant another hospital visit.

    I am outraged.

I do my best to avoid talking religion or politics with my parents, but I have decided on my next rejoinder.  "I can't go to church there because I am not a Republican."  Answer will likely be "That's OK!  You don't have to be!  We are non-political!"  To which I can only reply BULLSHIT.

I have tried to warn them that by aligning with the radical right they are cutting their own throat.  If that crowd is successful in eliminating my atheist ass out of society, and the gays and the pacifists... the Mormons are next.   And you can take that to the bank. is America's Blog of Record
