    to 'judicial activism' is pretty easy to see--they oppose judges who will uphold anything that changes the status quo or who will strike down things that uphold the status quo.

      here the "anything" with those scary liberal tendencies are LAWS and RULES.  Hence the activist conservative judges are OPPOSING themselves to the rule of law (in defense, as you say, of anything to do with the bad old days).
