    not making this up) sauerkraut renamed as "liberty cabbage". Both wars had German restaurants renaming themselves things like "The Swiss Garden". I think one exception was "Luchow's", because people who just saw the name thought it was a Chinese restaurant!

    As far as cities and towns, there were a few other Berlins, and New Berlins that actually changed their names. Oddly, the Kaiser shipyards, which made liberty ships amazingly quickly, had trouble when they wanted to expand one of their housing developments during the war. Some city-councilperson didn't want anything named after "the Kaiser" in his town.

    I forget who said, "Beauty is only skin deep, but stupid goes through and through", but they weren't wrong.
