  •  Okay, I have a degree in linguistics. (14+ / 0-)
This guy is full of crap. It is perfectly natural for words in English to be pronounced with stress on the final syllable as in "Sotomayor". English has no regular stress rules, and stress can generally fall on any syllable of a word. Her follows the same stress pattern as other four-syllable words like "underachieve", "interrelate", "marionette", "misunderstand", "Guadalcanal", etc.

Of course you don't have to pronounce it exactly as a native Spanish speaker would. Nobody is expecting English speakers, for example, to refrain from pronouncing the final "R" in the traditional English way. But seriously, if English is your native tongue then you should have no problem stressing the final syllable of a four-syllable name.

    Sanity is overrated.
