    We can now talk glowingly of our Italian or Irish or Scottish or Jewish immigrant parents... those groups have safely been assimilated - enough time has passed (and enough success stories have been told) that conservatives can call them Americans.  Latinos, on the other hand, thanks to the significant continuing influx of mostly lower class people from Mexico, are broad-brushed as "the other".  (Same reason that being Catholic and on SCOTUS is no longer an issue... where it was for conservatives in previous generations).
