    Bush, particularly, was incredibly color-blind.

However, the GOP is the party of the Southern Strategy. That taints them, unfortunately, in ways that have no mirror on the Left. Much of their reputation is by choice, and has only become problematic for them as demographics shift.

To quote Rush: "They're only 13%, who cares?". There's no misinterpreting that.

    •  Yes. The GOP has definitely played racial (0+ / 0-)

politics -- and so have the Democrats.

That reliable African-American vote has given them more than a few elections.

I don't fault them for that, btw.

Incidently, do you know who enacted (by Executive Order) Affirmative Action more or less as we know it today?

      Hint: It wasn't LBJ.
Second hint:  It wasn't a Democrat.

Free speech? Yeah, I've heard of that. Have you?

      •  racial politics (0+ / 0-)

means one thing when people pretend they love you (Dems to AAs) and another when people pretend they don't (GOP to AAs). Certainly the latter is more likely to be called "racist" than the former, and with better justification.

I don't know who enacted Affirmative Action, but in the context of the "racist" label of the GOP, it's irrelevant. As we both seem to agree, they cultivated that label.

        •  FWIW -- (0+ / 0-)

LBJ enacted the first policies that used the term "Affirmative Action", but his approach was based on best efforts, with no goals.

The modern goal-based (or, to some, quota based) was enacted by Richard M. Nixon.

and I think it's important to distinguish between the pre-Atwater GOP and the post-Atwater GOP.

It's also important to reiterate that GWB made significant contributions to African nations, something he is not widely credited for. On the other hand, there was the whole "black baby" thing with McCain. GWB was (to my mind) no racist, he simply played for the votes of racists.

              where it doesn't belong.

I agree, however, that some GOP strategies have been, ummmm, well...

OTOH, I wouldn't say that Democrats were any better towards Sarah Palin.

and include Clinton. Sexism is not as obvious as racism, but far far more pervasive and subtle.
