    This was what I was trying to get at (see my post, "So Kill Me," above). I kinda disagree with you because I do think that the context does help. But can we on the left honestly critique our own? If we can do that, if we can apply the same critique to a Latina that we would apply to a white male, then we are light years ahead of Conservatives. We also then continue to pull down that artificial barrier between poor and working class folks of all races. Then Progressives win.

      The opposite of honestly critiquing your own would be the last eight years under Bush.  The Republicans got into power and pushed their own agenda without regards to merits, results, or any other legitimate critiques.  The Progressive movement would do well to avoid the same mistakes and be willing to admit mistakes no matter how large or small.

      And just to clarify my own comments above I don't believe that one bigoted comment should disqualify someone from public office regardless of their ethnic background.  The comment is disturbing but if that's the only time something like this has happened I'm more than willing to write it off.  I'd rather look at her entire record and her beliefs versus one isolated comment in an otherwise insightful speech from eight years ago.
