  •  There's already movement towards re-density (13+ / 0-)

with "transit villages" that are springing up around transit hubs, such as the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland and housing developments near the CalTrain stations along the Peninsula. (In fact, my spouse and I chose our current apartment because of its proximity to transit.) With tax incentives to purchase housing in those developments, along with tax incentives to ride transit (even just the ability to deduct the cost of one's monthly transit pass off your 1040) would go a long way to getting people out of their cars and onto transit.

And GM already has hybrid technology for transit vehicles available -- which they have supplied for years to New Flyer Industries, a Canadian bus manufacturer who has buses running on the streets of many US cities.

Civility is the way of telling someone to go fuck themselves in such a way that the someone agrees it probably is a good idea.
