How does one take an apology for saying racist things seriously or as legitimate. It's hard to believe that one can write/post racist things and then very shortly apologize for it because that is something that is so internalized, so much of a part of a person's core that it would take years and years to renounce. It would be a whole process started by something that was a very violent startling of that thinking, like a startling life event that caused one to begin to rethink one's world view.

I hate people who write/post/say those types of things. I have zero respect for them. They are subhuman in my book.

except for the "subhuman" part is true - but... I have had just that transformation in the last few months regarding this issue and it has been nasty. I know for a fact at first I said some really crappy things not even realizing they were crappy - and it was only through extended discussions with cool, rational people that I realized I needed to change that attitude.

I think there is room for others to take that path.

Look, who would have thought President Obama could get such widespread support - yet he did. Americans had to face years of negative propaganda, but, seeing what a joke the Republicans became helped them.

People can change if they want to - if you devalue an apology then why should the person apologize - you know what I mean?

"(about Newt...) You're pathetic. And I hate everything you stand for. Go away and take Dick Cheney and Karl Rove with you while you're at it. "
