  •  It is fantastic (10+ / 0-)

Sadly they are getting some of the same traffic problems as the other islands.  But you must see Hanalei Bay, Haena Point, the Na Pali Coast, the Kalalau Overlook and Waimea Valley. Just spectacular.

    •  My husband has been to Kauai; I've only been (13+ / 0-)

to Oahu, where you live now (and yes, where all of the people seem to be lol). Mr. Boofdah loved Kauai when he went and spent each waking minute in the water snorkeling. I, on the other hand, was only 13 when I visited, and thus didn't appreciate it as much as he did (he was a young adult). My grandparents were stationed at Pearl (granddad was career Navy and a CPO), so that afforded my family to visit them and have a free place to stay.

My favorite place while we were there, though, was the very peaceful Kailua Beach, which was only a mile from where my grandparents lived, and we could walk there from their house. It is the very same beach on which the Obamas are pictured vacationing often:

Disclaimer: I didn't take the above picture; it's on jenontheshore's collection on Flickr.

Is Kailua still as peaceful and untouched as it was in the early 1980s, when my family visited? or has it become more commercial (like Waikiki, which I detested even back then)?

Duh...I almost missed this (it's for the photo above):
